Leonora op-shop the Second Hand Room is proving so successful it has been forced to stay shut for a week to sort through “a flood of donations”.

Shire of Leonora president Peter Craig said the op-shop had been a success, with many people coming through to pick up blankets and clothing.

“For local people to be able to receive things for nothing was part of the Shire setup and it’s a positive,” Cr Craig said.

He said the op-shop was helping the community, and was better than sending clothes and items in usable condition to the tip.

The new op-shop was opened in July by the Leonora Community Resource Centre at the J. G. Epis Centre, and donations have been rolling in, with all the items given away free of charge.

The shop has been open every Wednesday from 9am-4pm, with a range of items available from clothing to toys, kitchenware and household goods.

“If you need to clear out your wardrobe or kitchen or kids toybox, and your items are still in good condition, then please consider dropping them off to the CRC so that your items can be re-used and re-loved by someone else,” the Leonora CRC said.

Cr Craig told the Kalgoorlie Miner last month said Nyunnga-Ku Women’s Group had also been helping with the op-shop and sifting through the donations to ensure items of quality were on display.

He noted that St Barbara representatives were in Leonora and took interest in the project, prompting them to put a call out for donations within the mining company.

“It’s just bringing people together . . . and if you’re doing that, and there’s a sense of a sense of warmth . . . then that’s a good thing,” Cr Craig said.
