Gascoyne growers devastated after Carnarvon fire tears through more than 80 per cent of banana crops

A blaze in Carnarvon which quickly spread to banana plantations, tearing through more than 80 per cent of growers’ crops, is believed to have caused more than $1 million in damages. The blaze, which began by the Gascoyne River near Bibbawarra Road in Northern Plantations on Monday, September 16, has devastated growers in the region, after it quickly grew out of control as firefighters fought to contain the flames over 24 hours. It tore through 80 hectares of land, including 8.1ha of banana crops. Community emergency services manager Michael Antony said there was significant damage, with growers losing machinery and irrigation connections. He said one grower lost up to 95 per cent of crops, while another lost about 80 per cent. Thankfully, no homes were destroyed by the blaze. “I can’t speak highly enough of what the firefighters did on the day. I was there with them, and we had banana crops less than a metre from the back of the home, and they saved that house,” Mr Antony said. More than 60 firefighters were on the ground, backed by 15 support personnel from St John WA. Mr Antony said it was amazing to see the community come together and offer up resources to manage the blaze. “Normally it’s town people going out to save pastoral property and on this occasion we had six pastoral fire trucks arriving to town to help us, and one came from as far away as 100km,” he said. “Without those resources, this fire would have been a lot worse.” Some received minor injuries, including firefighters and a plantation owner who tried removing the radiator cap from his tractor. Mr Antony said it would take about two years for the burnt banana crops to regenerate, while crops could face ongoing damage until the water supply was repaired. While the shire of Carnarvon is yet to release a formal damage estimate, Sweeter Banana Cooperative business manager Doriana Mangili estimated there was in excess of $1 million in damages. “It’s about 15 per cent of Sweeter Banana’s production that’s gone, possibly a little bit more. It’ll take a hit on jobs, because we obviously have less to pack, and those farms won’t need to employ as many people,” she said. “But it’s mostly just devastating for those farmers who have worked so hard to have their farms up and running and keep their crops nice and tidy.” One of the growers told Ms Mangili 20 years of hard work had been ripped away from them. On Friday, about 30 people joined the growers to mop up. Ms Mangili said the Cooperative would continue to provide moral and physical support to affected growers. “They managed to clear up both farms and get the pipe work out of all of them, so that they’re in a closer situation to replanting — something that would have taken them probably weeks or months to do on their own,” she said. The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
