A large street brawl in Carnarvon involving about 100 people has left a nine-year-old boy in Perth Children’s Hospital after he was allegedly struck by an object while sitting inside a car. On Sunday, March 12 about 1.30pm, Carnarvon police will allege a wild brawl erupted on the streets of Carnarvon as a result of an alleged assault to a 36-year-old days before. OIC Sen. Sgt Mark Ardley said it was believed the brawl started from a “fight to resolve” an earlier incident between two families and the issue escalated, with more than 100 people in involved. Sen. Sgt Ardley said during the fighting, a nine-year-old boy was struck by an object in the head while sitting in a parked car. “He was taken to Carnarvon hospital by family members and was later airlifted to Perth Children’s Hospital and is believed to be in a stable condition,” he said. Police minister Paul Papalia condemned the behaviour saying it was “very clear” alcohol was to blame despite a liquor ban in place at the time. “It’s very disturbing but...what is very clear, the driver of most of this violence is the use of alcohol. So I think that what needs to be considered is ongoing restrictions of takeaway of some description and that will be part of the response,” he said. “It’s very disturbing that a child got hurt.” “Once police attended everyone dispersed and the parties who caused the fight were immediately arrested.” Sen. Sgt Ardley said Carnarvon police would continue to investigate and apprehend those responsible for the brawl. “It’s disappointing to see this happen despite all the efforts put in place for the safety of the community,” he said. “This is to be reviewed and heavily scrutinised and anyone found to be committing offences during the incident will have a date with the magistrate.” Sen. Sgt Ardley said alcohol restrictions were put in place for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday to help curb alcohol-related violence in the town and minimise harm to the community.
