Kate Southam guided Scenic Lord to victory in the annual Roebourne Cup at the Nor West Jockey Club on Saturday.

The running of the 153rd Roebourne Cup saw 3000 punters flock to the racecourse in time for the main race.

The Natalie Burke-trained horse dominated the 2200m event, running in second place at the 400m mark before making its way to the front of the pack.

In the end Southam guided Scenic Lord to victory by just over one length to second placed Macavity, with Speed N Reef rounding out the top three.

Southam said the Roebourne Cup always had a huge turnout and was a great race.

“It’s great to win the Roebourne Sprint and the cup for Natalie, she really deserves it and she does a great job with the horses,” she said.

Southam said fitness was key to the result. “It's one thing to be fit for grass but another for dirt,” she said.

“It was a bit softer today. It usually runs a bit harder than what it was.”

The first race, an 1100m handicap, was taken out by Natasha Faithfull and her horse Chengdu by half a length over Demeritise and Tumut River.

Colin Haddon rode Can’tcatchthis to victory in the Class One Handicap with Top Pocket finishing second and I Hope You Dance rounding out the top three.

The Roebourne Work Camp Handicap was won by Anvil Green followed closely by Bartrader and Lamplight Lili.

Articulator took out the 1800m Trasan Handicap, with Faithfull successful on Enterprise in the 1200m Nor West Group Handicap.
