An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 has struck the Macquarie Island region in the southern Pacific Ocean, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) says.

Thursday's quake was at a depth of 29.3km, USGS said.

The US Tsunami Warning System said there was no tsunami warning after the quake.
