Narrogin’s call for new emergency services co-located building denied due to insufficient government funds

The State Government has again rejected the Shire of Narrogin’s funding application for more emergency services resources. In July, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services rejected the Shire’s application for a $5 million co-located emergency services building and a community emergency services manager for the second year running. Shire president Leigh Ballard and chief executive Dale Stewart travelled to Perth on July 31 to meet with the Minister for Emergency Services Stephen Dawson for answers. Mr Stewart said the minister was “sympathetic” but told them the government did not have sufficient funds. “The Narrogin East and Wickepin fire in 2022 reaffirmed to us the importance of having an appropriate training facility,” he said. “He was sympathetic to the local government grant scheme not having sufficient funding to prioritise our co-location. “We have 220 volunteer firefighters and 20 volunteer SES members who deserve better. “They’re crying out for modern facilities, operating out of sheds and old structures for the 60s and 70s that aren’t fit for purpose anymore.” Mr Stewart said he did not believe the Government had reviewed the allocation of and priorities for community emergency services managers for many years. “The answer is to try and get more resources but that falls on deaf ears because the State Government doesn’t provide those resources,” Mr Stewart said. “Our shire has a 6000 population and no CESM whereas several local governments with 1000 people do.” The idea to demolish the current shed and construct a new facility for volunteers and training, including five to six bays for fire trucks and SES unit vehicles, was proposed by Narrogin SES and DFES volunteers in 2022. The CEO said the current building is too small to house their four emergency service vehicles and the two $1 million new rescue vehicles that will arrive in Narrogin next month. The $60,000 for the refurbishment of the SES building project is being carried over to finance the design phase of the new building. Mr Stewart said the minister was open to the Government directly funding bushfire volunteer insurance, with rising expenses exceeded the funding that shires receive by approximately $10,000. “We felt it was timely to remind the minister of our desires and priorities for our community,” he said. “We have confidence through advocacy we will be successful.” Mr Dawson has been contacted for comment.
