Narrogin Child Protection Services calls for help to better protect at-risk Wheatbelt families

Striking child protection workers claim regional services are “in a crisis”, putting children in danger, as they continue their plea for lighter caseloads, more staff, and increased resources. Narrogin’s Department of Communities Child Protection workers went on strike last month saying their services are crumbling due to alleged excessive workloads and a lack of resources. Through July and August, workers from at least nine CPS regional offices participated in strikes with Narrogin joining the fight on August 29 when six workers headed to Northam to march alongside Merredin, Moora, and Northam CPS workers. Narrogin delegate Alex Ballantyne said she didn’t think the town’s child protection service was providing a service because they only had eight staff. Ms Ballantyne said one staff member was carrying 18 cases — above the legal maximum of 15 and equalling 41 children — and they could travel up to three hours to visit one child because Narrogin’s district was so large, making it impossible to give these vulnerable children the care and attention required. “We need more staff and lower caseloads so we can get in there and do some work and make their lives better,” she said. “We’re leaving kids in dangerous situations where we could have a child death very easily, and seeing kids that desperately need help and families crying out to us saying ‘you need to do something’ and we can’t. “We have no carers now so children have to be left in abusive neglectful homes, we have nowhere to put them.” Ms Ballantyne said that in her 11 years in CPS, she used to work closely with the families, build relationships, and achieve good outcomes, but now “there’s not enough hours in the day” because of the overwhelming caseloads. “It’s all bandaid work at the moment, it’s a crisis,” she said. “We want help from anyone. “Every child in Narrogin deserves to live in a safe home, so we need to pick this up before the Department can’t function.” A Department of Communities spokesperson said the department continued to engage in good faith with the CPSU/CSA. “The Department of Communities aims to ensure all children have an allocated case worker, where this is not possible, children still receive access to supports and services and are overseen by a team leader,” they said. “Since July 1, 2017, the State Government has increased its Child Protection case-carrying position FTE by more than 30 per cent. “Child Protection workers do an incredibly important job in supporting Western Australia’s most vulnerable children — the safety of children is always the number-one priority.”
