YMAC to hold native title forum in Carnarvon to provide Traditional Owners with information about the Act

A native title forum will be held in Carnarvon this month to educate Traditional Owners on the Native Title Act, prescribed bodies corporate and the role of Aboriginal organisations. Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation (YMAC) will hold the forum on Tuesday, June 27 at the Gwoonardu Mia Multipurpose Centre. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss and learn more about the native title system and the roles and functions of Indigenous organisations. The forum runs from 9am-3pm with morning tea and lunch provided. Topics likely to be covered during the forum will focus on developments in the area of native title and other matters as they arise. YMAC chief executive Simon Hawkins said the forums would focus on grassroots native title issues and the rights and responsibilities of native title holders. “It’s a chance to ask questions, find out how the process works, who you will be dealing with and the various steps along the way,” he said. “There will also be discussions on what happens after native title determinations and where you can go for help.” Mr Hawkins said the forums were a way to get information on YMAC teams, how they’re involved in native title and be updated on recent priorities and projects. “We’ll also be looking at what PBCs do — when a determination is made, native title holders must establish a corporation called a prescribed body corporate to manage and protect their native title rights and interests,” he said. “The native title forums will look at this process, and what is required, once a PBC has been established.” To register for the Carnarvon forum visit tinyurl.com/carnarvon2023
