Women’s basketball Rd 6: Olympians and Pumas both drop 60 points in their wins

Pumas and Olympians both dropped 60 points in their wins on Monday in women’s division one of the Geraldton basketball league. Pumas got up 60-46 over Trades, picking up their second straight win after falling to Chapman Valley in round four, which moves them back to the top of the ladder. The game was tight early as both sides traded the lead to start the game and early turnovers didn’t give either team a chance to pull ahead. Trades had a strong second quarter performance which allowed them to pull ahead and lead at the half despite Pumas’ earlier slim lead. Down by nine points going into the third quarter, Pumas dominated the ball game on both sides. Led by scoring charges from the likes of Millie Gerreyn and Mikenna Schultz, Pumas outscored Trades 30-4 in the third quarter, turning the game around and putting them well ahead. Trades managed to come alive again in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough as Pumas ran away with a 60-46 win. Gerreyn scored 22 points along with Schutlz’s 15, while Daisy Whitehurst scored 15 points for Trades. While in the other match-up, Olympians thumped Chapman Valley with a 32-point victory. Olympians had the jump but Chapman Valley managed to make it one point as they ended the first quarter down 12-11. However, the Olympians defensive pressure coupled with Chapman Valley mistakes quickly caused the game to get out of hand as the Valley struggled to find scoring, putting up just two points in the second. The game continued to trend in the Olympians’ direction throughout the second half, as they were firing in the scoring department while Valley only scored six and nine points in the final two quarters. Olympians ran away with the game 62-28, with Gemma Dix scoring 19 points and Kylie MacDonald 18. Grace Bowley was the top scorer for the Valley with eight points. In division two, Pumas got up over Trades 44-33, Stateside beat Hawks 33-25 and Valley grabbed a 40-20 win over Olympians.
