The Grain Industry of Western Australia releases report showing estimated yield from farmers in the Mid West

Recent grain data has revealed Western Australia has planted almost two million hectares of canola at the expense of lupins and oats, and is expected to harvest at least 20 million tonnes of crop this season. The Grain Industry of WA (GIWA) latest crop report statement said Geraldton Port Zone growers could expect crop improvement and at least average grain yields this season now rain had fallen over the last three weeks. “Total grain production is unlikely to match last year as the crops do not have as much biomass, with cereals shedding tillers and canola being very stressed in late June and early July,” GIWA wrote. The report said that canola crops had recovered well and yields would most likely to be equal to long-term averages, while warm conditions and early planting had accelerated the build-up in pest activity which would require controlling. The Geraldton port zone is estimated to contribute 3,227,000 tonnes to the State’s 19,609,000 total crop yield in the 2022 season. Mid West farmers are expected to produce 2,359,000 tonnes of wheat, 250,000 tonnes of barley, 460,000 tonnes of canola, 5000 tonnes of oats, 160,000 tonnes of lupins and 2000 tonnes of pulses.
