State Government announces $1.5 million to expand the Fish Aggregating Devices program

An extra $1.5 million is being injected to set up more popular fishing devices to help recreational fishers along the WA coast this year target different species, including off Jurien Bay. The McGowan Government this week announced the expansion of the Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) program. The extra funds is part of the support package in the wake of new rules banning demersal fishing at certain times of the year. The devices will help anglers attract other fish species, like tuna, marlin and mahi-mahi, rather than demersal stocks like pink snapper and dhufish. Eighteen new FADs will be installed over the next six months, in addition to a further 22 funded through the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund, putting recreational fishing licence fees to work. Four FADs went into the water off Cape Naturaliste last week, with more going in next month off Rockingham and at several Perth metropolitan coast locations between Rottnest and Two Rocks, in water depths of between 130 and 350 metres. Four FADs will be dropped off Jurien Bay before the end of the summer, as well as four off Albany and two off Mandurah. Recfishwest has conducted a State-wide FAD trial over the past three years, funded by the RFIF. The devices contain buoys or floats moored to the ocean floor using an anchor system. Baitfish are attracted to the devices, using the FAD as shelter, and in turn attract pelagic fish such as mahi-mahi, tuna and marlin. In southern parts of Western Australia, FADs are set up annually during summer and retrieved before the onset of winter storms. FADs in northern waters are used during winter and pulled up before to the start of the cyclone season. Fisheries Minister Don Punch said the extra $1.5 million would provide even more exciting opportunities for anglers up and down the WA coast. “Switching your fish and targeting different species will allow other more vulnerable fish like dhufish and pink snapper time to recover to ensure there are plenty of fish for future generations to enjoy,” he said.
