Shire of Perenjori welcomes tenders to build supermarket in town

The Shire of Perenjori is seeking tenders to design and construct a local supermarket after residents have been left to travel a 100km round trip to shop for their groceries for the past five years. The Mid West town has not had a supermarket since the end of 2018 when it closed, leaving locals travelling 40km for groceries to the nearest town or 200km to Geraldton. The building was completely destroyed by cyclone Seroja in 2021 and the land was purchased by the Shire after it was demolished. Perenjori Shire deputy president Jude Sutherland said a supermarket was an important asset which would encourage people to the town. “It’s hard to attract people into our town without a supermarket,” she said. “It’s a vital part of our community to supply a supermarket for our community and everyone to use. “People are just shopping wherever they can which is not ideal. We would love to have our own supermarket in Perenjori . . . you don’t want to be travelling a 100km round trip.” Cr Sutherland said engagement with the community showed the idea was well supported, with the design concept based on an IGA model. “I think it’s all about improving our liveability and encouraging people to come to rural areas and move their family out here and join a welcoming community,” she said.
