Shire of Morawa hosts incredible NAIDOC Week celebrations with students from across the Mid West joining

It was an incredible day out in Morawa as communities from across the district joined to celebrate the annual Mid West NAIDOC event. The Shire of Morawa-organised event was held on Wednesday, July 17, where more than 100 people participated in a march and activities throughout the day. Inspirational Aboriginal leaders took to the stand, with guest speakers including Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley, Geraldton creative and academic Dr Charmaine Papertalk Green, and former AFLW and West Coast Fever player Alicia Janz. Elder Linda McIntosh gave a welcome to country speech, which was followed by a smoking ceremony performed by Daniel Green. William Mullaley played the didgeridoo as attendees collectively marched through the street towards Winfield Street Centre. Primary and secondary school students from Morawa, Three Springs, Perenjori and Mingenew attended, participating in activities and learning more about Aboriginal culture and history. Aspiring performers from Morawa District High School’s Year 9 and 10 pop band and junior choir entertained the crowd, as well as the Binmaga Yamatji Dance Group.
