An Aboriginal enterprise will receive $20,000 in compensation from the Shire of Carnarvon in order to develop a new waste disposal facility in Coral Bay. The Baiyungu Aboriginal Corporation (BAC) requested compensation from the Shire for the excision of a 28.6ha land parcel at Cardabia Pastoral Lease to develop the facility. The existing waste facility servicing Coral Bay is close to capacity and the Shire has been seeking to build the new unit on land leased to the BAC. The BAC supported the excision of land for the Coral Bay waste facility with it being the Shire’s responsibility to care, control and manage the new reserve. The council carried the motion to pay a one-off $20,000 fee to the corporation, as well as provide a weekly domestic waste pick-up of up to six 240-litre rubbish bins from the homestead and associated buildings for the life of the facility. The estimated cost of the weekly waste pick-up would cost the Shire $4160 each year, with CPI increases expected in the future. The council thanked the BAC for their support and decision to provide the 28.6ha of land. The motion was carried 8-0.
