The desperate search for a missing elderly kite surfer last seen off Kalbarri yesterday afternoon is continuing today, with marine and aerial assets combing the water.

The man, believed to be a local in his 70’s, was reported missing about noon yesterday after he was seen falling into the water near the mouth of the Murchison River.

Police rushed to the scene, however witnesses lost sight of the man before rescue boats arrived.

Mid West-Gascoyne District Supt Roger Beer said said rough weather conditions had hampered the search efforts yesterday.

“Given the conditions we are obviously very concerned,” he said.

A gale-force wind warning was issued by the Bureau of Meteorology at 4pm, with a strong wind warning ins place for the Mid West coastline today.

Helicopters, a Polair 61 fixed wing aircraft and multiple vessels are continuing the search today.
