RSPCA WA warns how to avoid doggy mishaps and cat-astrophes this Christmas period

Holiday hazards can turn your Christmas into a cat-astrophe, with the Christmas period rife for mishaps involving your pets, warns RSPCA WA. The charity says Google Trends data revealed a huge 60 per cent rise in Australians searching for an “emergency vet” on Christmas Day last year. RSPCA WA shelter manager Emily Smith said common causes were toxic foods and stomach blockages. “Pets who eat dangerous foods over the holidays may need emergency surgery, while things like wrapping paper and decorations can cause intestinal blockages, requiring emergency surgery,’ she said. “The cost of emergency vet treatment will easily climb into the thousands, so it’s a good idea for pet owners to refresh their memory on foods which are toxic to pets ahead of the holiday season. “Cooked bones are brittle and can lodge in your pet’s windpipe or stomach, while chocolate, fruit mince pies and Christmas pudding all contain ingredients that are toxic to dogs. “Alcohol is another toxic ingredient that is in abundance at holiday parties, so watch your guests aren’t leaving glasses within reach of prying paws. If in doubt, always contact your vet straight away for advice.” Stress was another risk factor to pets, the RSPCA reminded animal owners, with unfamiliar people, children and loud toys potential triggers. To help pets stress less, owners should exercise them before the festivities begin, and make sure they have a quiet place to retreat to if the party gets a bit much and use enrichment toys to keep them distracted. If a dog shows any behaviours that they are uncomfortable, such as licking their lips, showing the whites of their eyes, or turning their head away when a child or adult is patting them, intervene immediately, and take them to their “safe space” to relax. Owners should also check their local vet’s holiday hours. “Keeping these dangers in mind should help prevent any mishaps, and ensure the holidays are happy for two and four-legged family members alike,” Ms Smith said.
