Rovers Football Club auction special jerseys to fundraise for cancer research during Pink Round

Greenough Oval was covered in pink on Saturday as Rovers Football Club honoured former coach Jamie Campbell and raised more than $20,000 for breast cancer. Demons supporters flooded through the gates for their home clash against Towns and in support of the second Pink Round fundraiser in tribute of Rovers legend Jamie Campbell, who lost his battle with stage four liver cancer last year at age 42. The club’s league side ran out with new jumpers with a pink stripe tucked between their usual red-and-black colours, finished with a pink backing, while the women’s came out with a solid pink and black jersey following their first win since their amalgamation last weekend. League jerseys were later auctioned and went towards fundraising for the McGrath Foundation and Breast Cancer Network Australia. A welcome to country and minute silence was performed in respect to those who have lived through cancer before the Campbell family was asked to toss the coin. This year, the club established a best-on-ground shield and trophy in remembrance of their former leader. Club president Daniel Starling said the Campbell family presented the best-on-ground shield that would hang in the Rovers clubroom. “Every year we will add to it,” he said. “The first year we raised just over $20,000, last year we raised about $30,000, so it would be really nice to raise another $25,000 this year.” Items up for auction items included the 22 cancer fundraiser jerseys, camping equipment, hampers, vouchers for animal health checks, Tarcoola Takeaway, Rogue Pony and building supplies. Mr Starling confirmed the club raised an excess of $20,000.
