Geraldton has a new rising star in the AFL after Judd McVee was finally rewarded for a breakout season for Melbourne, earning the nomination for round 18.

For much of McVee’s fledging career, he has had to wait for his opportunities, spending a full year in the VFL after being drafted and now 18 games before getting Rising Star recognition.

This nomination comes after Melbourne’s thrilling one-point win over Brisbane on Friday night when McVee managed a handy 14 disposals and spent much of the night on outstanding small forward Charlie Cameron

“I actually played on him in round two, I was very nervous for that game,” he said.

“Michael Hibberd has played on him a couple of times and done a pretty good job, so I got a few notes off him the first time and then just adjusted my own way from round two to this game.”

The 19-year-old kept Cameron to just two goals as the Dees roared late to steal the win at the MCG.

Having now played every game this season, the 185cm defender has made a name for himself in contests, showing himself to be a fierce opponent who looks composed at AFL level.

His highest impact game came in round three against the Sydney Swans, when he managed 18 disposals. Overall, he has averaged 13.2 disposals and 1.4 tackles per game.

Back-line coach Troy Chaplin praised McVee for his improvement.

“He’s had really good start to the year — we’re loving his composure and his ability to win contests,” he said. “He very rarely loses his feet or gets beaten.

“For a young kid to be performing like that is exciting for him and (he’s) playing on some dangerous forwards. We’re really pleased with how he’s developing.”

In April, McVee signed a two-year extension with the club, meaning Dees fans will see more of the exciting young defender until 2025.
