Railways’ Jack Cocking was tested against some of WA’s best young talent over the weekend at the WA State AFL Combine. With the excitement of the upcoming draft, a select few who were not at the national combine were invited to the States, and that included Cocking who spent his 2023 campaign with the East Fremantle colts. The tests, which took place on Sunday, October 15 with temperatures that reached up to 32C, had the prospects show off their athletic capability. In the 2km time trial, Cocking clocked in a time of 6.59, which was 28 seconds behind the fastest time on the day. The former Blue impressed with his vertical capability, as he finished top three in the standing vertical jump with 72cm and tied second in running vertical jump with 94cm. Last season Cocking kicked 34 goals over the 14 games he played for Railways, and he made two appearances for the Blues this year, kicking 10 goals. The 18-year-old spent the most of 2023 playing for the East Fremantle Colts where he averaged 11.3 disposals, 5.7 marks, 1 tackle, 1.4 hit-outs over the 19 games he played, and kicking 49 goals with 19 behinds. Along with the invitation to the State combine, Cocking was selected to the WAFL Colts team of the year for his standout season. Cocking will hope to join the likes of other Mid West stars who have been drafted to the AFL in recent years including Carlton’s Jack Carroll, Port Adelaide’s Brynn Teakle and Melbourne’s rising star nominee Judd McVee. The AFL National draft will take place from November 20-21.
