A 10m-high flagpole at Monkey Mia Resort will be removed and replaced with two smaller flagpoles to fly both Australian and Aboriginal flags at the popular tourist attraction. RAC will remove the sole flagpole that currently flies the Australian flag and replace it with two new 6m-high flagpoles to fly both the Aboriginal and Australian flag. An RAC spokesperson said the current flagpole was in place at the resort when RAC acquired the property in 2015 and it was time for an upgrade. “As part of a review, we decided a change was needed to fly both the Australian National Flag and the Australian Aboriginal Flag. We see this as an important symbol of unity and recognition of our shared history,” they said. “We look forward to finalising this change in the coming months, following approval from the Shire of Shark Bay.” The Shark Bay council supported the motion at the most recent meeting.
