Pom in Oz with Derek Goforth: Schools country week an inspiring experience for students and staff

As an advocate for quality education and a firm believer in the power of inclusive learning environments, I cannot help but love schools country week both as a teacher and coach. This awesome event, held annually, brings together students from rural and regional areas, fostering a sense of community, camaraderie and personal growth, which, in my view, is unparalleled. This year as the coach of the debate team, I am filled with pride and gratitude for the incredible journey my debaters embarked upon during schools country week. Coaching the debate team was an experience that enriched my life in more ways than I could have imagined. It was a privilege to work with a group of talented, passionate, and dedicated students who were willing to step out of their comfort zones and take on the challenge of competitive debate. Our journey together began months ago with intensive preparation and training sessions. We delved into the art of persuasive argumentation, honed critical thinking skills, and explored various debate formats and strategies. As a coach, my role extended beyond imparting knowledge; it was about fostering an environment of trust, encouragement, and personal growth. During our preparation, I witnessed my debaters undergo remarkable transformations. They embraced the discomfort of challenging their own beliefs, questioning assumptions, and exploring unfamiliar perspectives. They engaged in rigorous research, analysing complex issues, and crafting compelling arguments. It was awe-inspiring to witness their growth as they pushed themselves beyond their perceived limits, discovering the power of their own voices. But it was at country week, my four debaters truly shone. They took to the stage with confidence and eloquence, engaging in intense debates on a wide range of thought-provoking topics. They eloquently presented their arguments, navigated rebuttals with grace and precision, and demonstrated the power of critical thinking and effective communication. While the results and accolades were certainly gratifying, what truly made me proud was seeing my debaters grow as individuals. They not only gained some mastery in the art of debate, but also developed resilience, adaptability, and the ability to think on their feet. They stepped out of their comfort zones and embraced the challenges that came their way, emerging stronger, more self-assured, and with a newfound appreciation for the power of open dialogue and respectful disagreement. Beyond the competition, country week provided a platform for my debaters to connect with peers from different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. They engaged in vibrant conversations, sharing ideas, and forming friendships that transcended geographic boundaries. They discovered the richness of diversity, recognising that true growth and understanding come from embracing a multitude of viewpoints. I believe country week is more than just a competition; it fosters community, connection and personal growth. It provides a platform for students to explore their potential, not just in debate but across all the sports. To my debaters, thank you for your dedication, passion, and willingness to push yourselves beyond your limits. You have made me proud, not only with your achievements but also with the growth you have demonstrated throughout this journey.
