Police say a young farm worker was lucky to walk away from a serious crash in Perenjori at the weekend after the ute he was driving smashed into a big tree.

The man in his 20s was found by a local farmer asleep at the wheel of the wrecked vehicle about 9.30am on Sunday and managed to walk away without serious injury.

He was taken by St John Ambulance to Morawa District Hospital for treatment then flown to Perth for further assessment as a precaution.

Perenjori officer-in-charge Sgt Nathan Good said police strongly suspected the driver was impaired by drugs or alcohol when he crashed the car about 6am.

“We are waiting to hear back on test results so see if he had any alcohol or drugs in his system,” Sgt Good said.

“He doesn’t remember the incident. At least the young fella came out in one piece.

“If you’ve had a big night before reconsider your driving options.”
