Only flush the three Ps to keep our system safe

As daily habits change in response to COVID-19, the Water Corporation is asking people to make the wastewater crews’ work day easier by ensuring they only flush the “three Ps”: pee, poo and (toilet) paper. Water Corporation Mid West manager Steve Greeve said items such as wet wipes, paper towels and sanitary products did not break down in wastewater pipes and could cause blockages. “If a blockage occurs in Water Corporation’s wastewater network, our crews have the unenviable job of clearing these blockages,” he said. “However, if the blockage occurs within the internal plumbing of a home, householders are responsible for any plumbing repair costs.” Mr Greeve said tap water was safe for use and water and wastewater treatment and disinfection processes were effective against the COVID-19 virus. “The drinking water we supply across the State meets 100 per cent of the health requirements set by the Department of Health,” he said. “The advice from the World Health Organisation and the Water Services Association of Australia is that there is no evidence that the COVID-19 virus is transmitted by drinking water.” Mr Greeve said he had no concerns about his workers catching the virus from exposure to sewage. “Water Corporation’s wastewater crews manage exposure to all pathogens through ‘business as usual’ hygiene practices and the use of our standard personal protective equipment,” he said. “The controls already in place to protect Water Corporation’s wastewater crews are based on keeping workers safe.”
