More than 10 nationalities at Carnarvon police station reflect the town’s diverse community

Carnarvon police are a reflection of their town’s cultural diversity, with a workforce made up of more than 10 nationalities. Whether it be gender or culture, Carnarvon police station doesn’t discriminate. And it’s a mixture that is said to help enhance communication and problem solving in the community. Currently, 12 female staff work at the Carnarvon police station, as well as six Aboriginal staff, including a senior Aboriginal police liaison officer, a community liaison officer and four Aboriginal constables. There are officers born in Australia, as well as officers from Brazil, France, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore and South Africa. Const. McKenzie Birchall is an Aboriginal man and said the diverse work environment impacted on how officers engaged and built relationships in the community. “It allows you to have a larger understanding of different cultures and allows you to engage with different people in the correct way, which allows us to provide the most appropriate service to the community,” he said. Const. Aleysha Elmer, from New Zealand, said being able to represent her culture and nation filled her with a sense of pride. “Policing is culturally diverse and we deal with people from any and all walks of life,” she said. “Being able to relate to someone from your country and culture allows for better community connection, respect and forms stronger relationships with members of the public.” Indian man Sen. Const. Dawson D’Souza said he felt accepted in his workplace and that his input was valued. “My experience in this police force has been extremely positive and I consider my colleagues to be highly progressive individuals,” he said. Carnarvon police officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Mark Ardley said police were actively recruiting to build a workforce that reflected and represented the wider community and encouraged anyone interested in policing to apply.
