Mid West and Gascoyne projects included in latest round of Cook Government’s Community Garden Grants Program

Mid West and Gascoyne projects will share almost $200,000 in funding under the Cook Government’s latest round of the Community Garden Grants Program. The scheme provides grants of up to $10,000 to programs that support the establishment and development of sustainable, edible community gardens in WA and encourage community members to give back. The Shire of Carnarvon secured a grant to set up the Carnarvon Community Garden project at Hutchison Park as part of the Youth Precinct, a shared space promoting sustainable gardening practices and growing edible produce. Another grant went to the Shire of Murchison to revitalise its community garden and incorporate the adjacent botanical walk and unused tunnel shade house to create a vibrant and inclusive precinct. The Shire of Mingenew has received funding to build reticulated garden beds at the Mingenew Community Garden for growing edible items such as vegetables, herbs and fruits. The garden will be available for all community members to plant crops, weed, fertilise and harvest the produce when ready to be eaten. The Exmouth Community Garden has also secured financial support to undertake the climate resilience and accessibility project. Ageing reticulation will be replaced with a sustainable garden design and provide a more inclusive space through flat, stable pathways and appropriate seating. “Getting involved in local community garden projects can help people to improve community connections, develop new skills and share physical, social and mutual benefits of growing edible produce,” Community Services Minister Sabine Winton said. The grants are available to incorporated not-for-profit community organisations, local government authorities and community groups.
