Meekatharra District High School Barndi Mayu Fashion Show celebrates culture and connectedness in Mid West

Glitz and glam is set to make one Mid West town sparkle this week during a fashion show encouraging a sense of community and cultural connectedness in youth. Meekatharra District High School will hold the Barndi Mayu (Good Kid) Fashion Show on Saturday, October 26, to celebrate culture, fashion and community in WA’s outback. Starting at 3pm and running until 5pm, volunteer models from across the Mid West region will strut their stuff on the catwalk after months of planning. Participants have taken part in wellbeing and cultural workshops, as well as model training to prepare them for the runway, led by Noongar model Shannon McGuire from the Kirrikin Foundation. Community members have been getting involved, from making jewellery and other fashion items to volunteering to help with make-up and hairstyling on the day. Meekatharra woman Timika King has led the vision for this project and said she knew first-hand how intimidating it could be in front of a crowd for the first time. She is a musician and representative for Communities of Focus. “I just can’t wait to see the smiling faces of our Meekatharra community and to hear our people cheering them on,” she said. “I’m a performer and have been on stage heaps of times; I know how scary it can be to step out for the first time but it also makes you feel so good. “It’s really exciting thinking about how proud everyone’s going to be.” A free takeaway dinner will be provided to all participants and attendees.
