Lightning has sparked two bushfires close to one another in the Shires of Ashburton and Carnarvon.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services is asking motorists to avoid the area along North West Coastal Highway south of the Burkett Road intersection because of heavy smoke.

According to DFES, one blaze is burning on the western side of the highway, about 13km south of the Burkett Road intersection, and is moving towards the highway.

The other fire is burning on the eastern side of the highway, about 3km south of the Burkett Road intersection.

According to DFES there is no threat to lives or homes and firefighters are monitoring the flames.

No roads have been closed but motorists who must use the highway are asked to turn their headlights on and drive slowly through the area.

The fire was reported on Monday evening and DFES issued bushfire advice shortly after 6pm yesterday.
