Geraldton Tennis Club says its Patrons Day attracted a good crowd in the sunshine on Saturday as the club looked to attract more players to the game.

“It was great weather,” club patron Ken Harris said.

Helen Kelly and Maybella Brown won the women’s first division.

Ruth Vorster and Susan Lawrence were runners-up.

Jennie Booeree and Renea Brown won the women’s second division ahead of Jenny Teakle and Shauna Scott.

Trevor Lewis and Ron Boeree won the men’s division one.

Tim Cupitt and John Spiers were runners-up.

Harris, 84 years old, won division two with Johan Vorster ahead of Charlie Wilson and Geoff Criddle.

Harris said he hoped players could go places in tennis, and hoped Saturday’s Patrons Day event would attract more people to the family sport.

Harris said it was possible to go places in tennis.

“It’s a good family sport,” Harris added.

“We need more young players.”

Harris is still hoping to make an Australian side and he thinks other up-and-comers — of any age — can have the same ambition.

While sports like basketball were increasingly popular, Australian tennis players had enjoyed great success, including winning world championships, he said.

Harris himself played in Wimbledon qualifiers and he has been competing locally since the 1950s.

He said youngster Caleb Sewell was an example of how juniors could progress in the game. Sewell was nominated for Mid West Academy of Sport Athlete of the Year at the Geraldton Guardian Mid West Sports Awards, held last Friday night.
