Harmony Festival in Geraldton unites culture and celebrates song, dance and food from around the world

Geraldton Foreshore came alive with colour at the weekend as cultural dance groups dressed in stunning costumes and performed alongside more than 60 flags from different nations to celebrate Harmony Day. More than 130 performers took turns exploring their cultures’ sense of song and dance at Stow Gardens on Saturday, celebrating the rich cultural diversity that surrounds Geraldton. Brazilian families danced into Stow Gardens proudly flying their flag before singing their national anthem with hands on hearts, while a young local leader Kathy Councillor opened the day with a welcome to country. Guests were able to get a taste of what makes more than seven cultures unique, including those of Indonesia, Africa, China, Colombia, Thailand, Philippines and New Zealand. Coleesha Jones laid out a sand mural and said the design was comprised of three circles and represented this year’s theme You, Me, Us. “Our community is a beautiful place and this design tells the story of our home and how we all connect together,” she said. Mid West Multicultural Association chair Noma Mahlangu said it was wonderful to see people coming together to enjoy each other’s company at the festival.. “It was moving to be a part of the ceremony as the Brazilian families came towards the stage dancing and singing with their flag,” she said. Perth’s premier Brazilian band and headline act Sambozzy had people dancing to the beat of their drums before the event finished off with a parade of nations, involving attendees marching with flags from around the world.
