Geraldton triathlon club puts on special Christmas race

Geraldton Triathlon Club held its annual Christmas teams challenge this month at St Georges beach. The race was a triathlete’s dream, with the swim cancelled due to stronger than usual winds. Racers dressed up in Santa costumes or as super elves and gingerbread men, and took to the streets with bikes and helmets covered in tinsel and adorned with bows and bells. Even the fastest had aero antlers and streamlined Santa hats. Competitors were randomly assigned into three-person teams, with everyone doing a leg of the tri before air-tagging their next team member. This mixed format led to people getting lost in transition, trying to enter through the exit, and racers scrambling to find helmets and shoes quickly. All this was done to the helpful cheers and shouts of encouragement from team members. Team Rudolph, consisting of Alison Simkin, Belinda Box and Ben Freer, took line honours.
