The Geraldton Buccaneers winning start to the season continues, defeating the Cockburn Cougars in an overtime thriller to stay on top of the NBL1-West ladder.

The Buccs and the Cougars were undefeated going into the match and one team’s record was set to be broken as they faced off on Saturday night.

The Cougars started strongly away from home, putting the Buccs on the back foot to go into quarter time leading 21-14.

Their second quarter was equally strong, extending their lead to go into half time 45-30.

The Buccs trailed for big portions of the game and it looked like their undefeated run was going to come to end.

However, with the crowd at Activewest Stadium behind them, the Buccs held the Cougars to a combined 17 points in the third and fourth quarters to force the game into overtime.

The Buccs continued this momentum in overtime, coming out 81-70 victors and handing the Cougars their first defeat of 2022.

Shaun Stewart was once again impressive for the Buccaneers with 30 points, seven rebounds and four steals with Malik Meunier contributing 16 points, nine boards and four assists.

Cameron Coleman added 12 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists, Liam Hunt eight points and five rebounds, and Mathiang Muo eight points.

The Buccs are now the only undefeated team in the competition and sit top of the NBL1-West ladder with a 131.70 percentage.

They continue their five game home run as they take on the fourth place Goldfields Giants next Saturday at 7pm.
