The Geraldton Buccaneers have claimed the ultimate glory after defeating the Joondalup Wolves 86-80 in the NBL1 West grand final. The emotional win that brought many players and fans to tears was cause for celebration, but the Buccs’ off-season does not start yet. As part of winning the NBL1 West division, the team now goes on to take part in the NBL1 national tournament, which consists of each NBL1 league winner competing for glory. The round-robin-style tournament will take place over three days, with the Buccs being the winners of the NBL1 West taking on the NBL1 East winners, the Sutherland Sharks in the first round. Since the Rockingham Flames won the whole tournament last year, they will be competing again and the competition is hosted in WA because of that. So while the team will be running on a high from their triumphant come back win against the Wolves, they will have to travel back down to Perth to compete against the country’s best players. The NBL1 National Finals takes place this weekend August 18-20 at HBF Stadium in Joondalup, with Geraldton taking on Sutherland at 6.30pm on Friday in the competition’s first round.
