Parts of the Great northern Highway have reopened today after being closed by flood waters from tropical cyclone Damien.

This afternoon, Great Northern Highway remains closed between Meekatharra and Kumarina.

The Goldfields Highway between Meekatharra and Wiluna is also closed.

Meekatharra acting chief executive Krys East said other than a lot of rain the storm doesn’t seem to have affected the town.

“(Meekatharra District High School) was closed yesterday because the entrance was flooded, but the rest of the town site seems fine,” she said.

A spokeswoman for Main Roads WA said water is still flowing across both roads at numerous locations and in some cases at a depth greater than 400mm.

“We anticipate the Great Northern Highway will remain closed until at least this evening, and possibly overnight,” she said.

“Due to the unsealed nature of the Wiluna to Meekatharra section of the Goldfields Highway, it is likely this road will remain closed for a longer period to protect the road surface.”

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises flooding is expected to continue in the Murchison River catchment area over the following days.

Flooding and fire warnings are updated on the Emergency WA website.

Road closures and maintenance works updates are available online from Main Roads WA.
