Extraordinary local government elections: Morawa, Three Springs, Yalgoo, Sandstone seek to fill council roles

Four shires in the Mid West and Murchison are yet to fill all of their council positions and are preparing for extraordinary elections in March, with communities urged to update their enrolment details. The WA Electoral Commission is calling for affected communities to ensure they are enrolled to vote before the cut-off date to 15 extraordinary local government elections to be held across WA. The Mid West and Murchison, Morawa, Three Springs, Yalgoo and Sandstone shires will be seeking to fill vacant councillor positions, following a lack of interest at the October election. Each shire is looking to fill one vacancy, except for the shire of Yalgoo, with two roles yet to be filled. WAEC commissioner Robert Kennedy said local governments played a significant role in people’s day to day lives and encouraged everyone to get involved if there was an extraordinary election in their patch. “If you’ve turned 18 recently, you’ve moved house or maybe you’re just not sure whether your enrolment details are up to date, jump on the WA Electoral Commission website to update your details,” he said.
