Exmouth community out in droves to celebrate grand opening of skate park with three-day event

Exmouth was the home of kick flips and sick tricks early last month as the community came together to celebrate the grand opening of its new skate park. About 500 people gathered at the shire’s state-of-the-art recreational precinct for a three-day event — the Exmouth Skate Fest. Running from August 30 to September 1, with the park’s official opening on August 31, attendees were treated to skate and BMX workshops, live music and various giveaways over the weekend to celebrate the occasion. The project was delivered by the Shire of Exmouth with funding from Santos, Lotterywest, the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and the Exmouth Cricket Club. Several local volunteers and community groups were also instrumental in the project’s delivery, the shire said. Minister for Sport and Recreation David Templeman expressed his congratulations to everyone who helped deliver the project. “Sport, recreation and community activities help to deliver important social, health and economic benefits,” he said. “I’m delighted that Shire of Exmouth residents and visitors are now also enjoying the skate park at this amazing precinct.” Lotterywest CEO Colin Smith said it was fantastic to play a role in the revitalisation of Exmouth’s recreational precinct. “It’s wonderful to see this project come to life and provide fun for all ages,” he said. Exmouth shire president Matthew Niikkula said the new skatepark was much more than a place to do tricks and flips. He said he was thrilled to be able to offer the new facility to the community with the help of the project’s various funding partners. “This is a space where everyone can come together, express themselves and build a multigenerational community,” he said. “It’s a place to challenge ourselves, overcome obstacles and learn valuable life lessons. “We are thrilled to be able to offer this fantastic new facility to our community.”
