Federal Durack MP Melissa Price is calling on the Department of Defence to restore community access to Bundegi Beach near Exmouth following cyclone Narelle earlier this year.
The Australian Government’s Department of Defence is responsible for restoring access, as the beach was originally developed by the US Defence Department for service personnel and their families.
According to Ms Price, the Shire of Exmouth has claimed the department has not rectified damage caused by the cyclone, causing accessibility issues.
Ms Price, who visited Exmouth recently, said she wished for Bundegi Beach to be accessible and had written to Federal Defence Minister Richard Marles to rectify the issue.
After the devastating impact of cyclone Narelle in late March, Bundegi Beach — which has been used for recreation over the years — now presents a blockade.
The Department of Defence closed access to Bundegi Beach and its boat ramp.
Ms Price said the community should be able to enjoy the recreational spot, calling on the department to remove the obstruction.
A Department of Defence spokesperson said: “Defence acknowledges the significant impact of tropical cyclone Narelle on the Exmouth region.
“Defence is working closely with the Shire of Exmouth regarding remediation works to restore the Bundegi boat ramp and beach area.
“Defence thanks the Exmouth community and council for their support and understanding whilst remediation works are under way.
“Updates will be provided to the community of Exmouth as remediation progresses.”
