A man is accused of repeatedly stabbing another man with a broken stubby, resulting in a severed artery, at the weekend in Spalding.

Police said two men known to each other became involved in an altercation about 3am on Sunday and 32-year-old Darryl Indich allegedly stabbed a 33-year-old man multiple times with broken glass.

Geraldton police acting officer in charge Sen. Sgt Nathan Johansen said the accused man had a stubby which he smashed and then brandished on Lawley Street.

He alleged the accused man stabbed the other man in the left wrist, causing a deep laceration and severing an artery, stabbed him in the left side of the face, causing a 8cm laceration, and inflicted another 30cm laceration to the left side of his back.

Police arrived and arrested the accused man, who Sen. Sgt Johansen said attempted to escape from custody during the arrest.

A St John WA spokesperson confirmed the 33-year-old man self-presented at a local hospital and had left the scene when ambulance crews arrived at the scene at 3.18am.

The 32-year-old appeared in Geraldton Magistrates Court on Monday facing charges of unlawful wounding, grievous bodily harm and escaping from lawful custody.

He was remanded in custody until March 2 and bail was not considered.
