A scam prevention forum will be held in Geraldton next week to ensure members of the community can identify and protect themselves from scammers.

Minister for Commerce Sue Ellery and a representative from Consumer Protection will present the forum, alongside Geraldton MLA, Lara Dalton.

Attendees will learn about common scam types, how to verify legitimacy and how to protect themselves when making online transactions.

“I know there is growing community concerns regarding scams and fraudulent behaviour online,” Ms Dalton said, adding the forum can be used as a way to safeguard loved ones as well.

She said keeping West Australians safe included “building awareness and skills in our community so we can better support each other and prevent our loved ones from being victims of scammers.”

Attendees are encouraged to discuss their concerns with the minister, to help contribute to future guiding strategies and policies.

“Attending a scam awareness forum is a great way to make sure you have all the information and resources you need to protect yourself and your loved ones from scammers,” Ms Ellery said.

The forum will be held at the Wonthella Bowling Club on Wednesday, June 5, from 1pm.

Anyone interested in attending the Geraldton scam prevention forum can RSVP via 9960 7961 or by emailing lara.dalton@mp.wa.gov.au.
