Carnarvon Shire progresses plan to establish sister city relationship with Croatian municipality of Antunovac

The Shire of Carnarvon is making moves to build bridges globally, by progressing a sister city relationship with the Croatian municipality of Antunovac. The council says the relationship aligns with its strategic community plan, which acknowledges the Shire’s history but also celebrates its diverse cultures. The initiative was proposed by WA Croatian Chamber of Commerce president Luke Jurcevic in a bid to recognise the contributions of the Croatian community to Carnarvon, economically, socially and culturally. The decision to explore this partnership follows several visits by Mr Jurcevic and WA Croatian Chamber representatives to Carnarvon in the past two years. Antunovac is a municipality located about 213km from the Croatian capital of Zagreb, offering a promising opportunity for collaboration. With a population of 3559 residents, Antunovac has a focus on significant transport corridors and agricultural production, providing a good symmetry with Carnarvon’s strategic position. The Shire says the proposed sister city relationship involved a host of mutually beneficial opportunities, including cultural exchange, economic partnerships, educational and professional programs, and tourism promotion. The council has accepted the invitation, and Shire president Eddie Smith and CEO Andrea Selvey will begin formalising the agreement in the New Year.
