Callum Williamson’s successful return to the track has him second on title ladder for Speedweek

After taking time off in 2023, Geraldton local Callum Williamson has made his return to the track and is now sitting second overall in the Speedweek title hunt. Following an extended break from sprint car racing, Williamson was back on December 26 in time for the WA Speedweek, where he has enjoyed immediate success. Facing some tough competitors who have travelled all the way from the United States to compete, Williamson sits second on the overall ladder after five rounds, with just one round left to decide the winner. In his first race back, Williamson grabbed second place behind American Rico Abreu in the Boxing Day sprint, followed by a third-place finish in round two. His biggest run came in round four on January 2, when he grabbed a win and became the first Australian to win in this year’s Speedweek. He won the main event with a time of 22min. 16.42sec, with his best lap coming in at 13.859, narrowly beating Brad Sweet from the US and Bunbury’s Dayne Kingshott. However, his success didn’t carry over into round five at Bunbury, as Williamson won his qualifying group and came out in a starting position of seven, but ended with an eighth-place finish in the main race, his lowest placing in Speedweek. With just one round left, Williamson sits in second place overall with 716 points from the first five rounds despite the poor finish in round five. He is just behind leader Abreu, who has 724 points. The final Speedweek round will be held at the Perth Motorplex Saturday January 13.
