Brothers jailed for “unrestrained” attack with spear, poles

Two brothers have been jailed for an “unrestrained, sustained and violent attack” that saw them hurl pots, poles and a spear at a house as people cowered inside. Carnarvon District Court heard Hamish Ryder, 21, and Kyle Ryder, 19, believed they were exacting revenge on behalf of their sister, who claimed men at the home had stabbed and assaulted her after she refused to trade sex for drugs. The Ryders each pleaded guilty to a count of unlawfully assaulting Jamie Philip Mongoo on November 25 last year at the South Carnarvon address. Mr Mongoo suffered minor injuries after being struck by a pole before fleeing the scene. They also pleaded guilty to three charges of wilfully and unlawfully damaging the exterior and interior of a public housing property, and failing to act, with intent to harm, which was likely to endanger the life, health or safety of their victims, Kenneth Samuel William Stanley Drummond, and Jermaine Charles Barron. The court was told the offenders had gone to a property on Illingworth Street with other members of their family and begun yelling for the victims to come out and fight them. The brothers believed Mr Drummond and Mr Barron had given their sister methamphetamine and demanded sex as payment, before stabbing her with a syringe and kicking her in the ribs. They smashed windows with metal poles as they and the victims hurled “numerous objects” at each other, while the elder brother forced his way in after the victims barricaded themselves in a back room, threatening to kill them, and attempting to start a fire. A fishing spear stuck into the wall above Mr Barron’s head, while Mr Drummond was hit with a pole and suffered a small cut. On Monday Judge Linda Petrusa told the brothers they shouldn’t take the law into their own hands. “That’s not your job. That’s mine,” she said. She handed down a total sentence of two years and 10 months. They will be eligible for parole after serving 17 months.
