Australian international water polo referee hosts clinic in Geraldton over the weekend

The Geraldton Water Polo Association played host to visiting Australian international referee Fiona Haigh over the weekend ahead of next year’s WA Country Championships. Haigh led a clinic on November 4, for referees before the local games, as well as providing mentoring and filling in as referee in the Friday and Saturday matches. The international referee and WA local, who has held clinics in Geraldton previously, supports giving back to the regions. “I love giving back to regional sport as there is so much talent that deserve to have quality coaching and mentoring in our sport,” Haigh said. “Supporting and developing regional referees in Geraldton is exciting as there are now opportunities to attend events such as the Australian Youth Championships that were not around when I began.” Her visit comes precedes next year’s country week championships, which will be held in Geraldton. “The facilities in Geraldton are fantastic and being part of the original working party to raise funds to build the indoor pool is special, particularly seeing it holds so many great competitions like WA Country Championships,” Haigh said. “This year these championships are back in Geraldton and it’s always a great event. “There will be more opportunities to come back and do some follow up observation and feedback sessions, which will contribute to the continued development of referees in Geraldton.”
