The 2022 Swimming WA Sunsmart Country Pennants will be held in Carnarvon. Swimming WA Country co-ordinator Jan Smith made the announcement during the medals ceremony at the Country Pennants in Geraldton last weekend, where Mid West and Gascoyne clubs were among the competitors. According to Swimming WA, last weekend’s event attracted more than 2000 swimmers, coaches, technical officials, parents and volunteers to Geraldton Aquarena. Geraldton came third in the A and C-divisions, while Carnarvon were top of the D-division. “There were many close races, reflected by the tight scores in the final standings,” a Swimming WA spokesperson said. Geraldton Amateur Swimming Club president James MacPherson said the event was expected to bring up to $1 million to Geraldton through tourist spending on accommodation and meals. The estimate was based on an economic calculation by the Midwest Sports Federation, which has a modelling tool its members can use to calculate the economic impact of sports events. Claire MacPherson, an organiser with the club, said the City of Greater Geraldton had helped run the event, which took about two years to plan. Swimming WA also held a Junior Dolphin Carnival in the indoor 25m leisure pool, which was fully booked with 20 registrations. All swimmers who participated learnt new skills and increased their swimming confidence, which will be translated into training or racing. .
