GNFL round eight wrap: Railways secure big win at the Rec against Chapman Valley in game of the round

Railways reigned supreme by 28 points against Chapman Valley in a top of the table clash at the Rec on Saturday in round 8 of the Great Northern Football League, 11.10 (76) to Chapman Valley 7.6 (48). Railways prevailed at home in what was an arm-wrestle before a third quarter blitz by the Blues’ forwards and midfielders, similar to the last time the two teams met. Flynn Dillon was named best on by the umpires in an impressive game for the Blues’ ruck. Coaches’ votes went to Matt Kimberley, Kieran Kavanagh, Jaigah Williams and Samuel Scally for the Blues. Chapman Valley’s top performers were Ringo McKenna, Dylan Williamson, Ricky Whiteaker, Tyrone Papertalk Jr and Jayden Schofield. Kane Simpson was impressive in the forward line with three goals while his brother Kobe kicked two. Neither team was able to break the deadlock in the opening term with both defensive groups holding strong against midfield penetrations. That was until a passage of end-to-end football saw the Royals transition off their halfback line, which found Kobe Simpson lining up for goal. Simpson broke that deadlock with the first goal of the game to Chapman Valley. Simpson then found himself lining up for goal number two after an ill-disciplined act from Railways led to a free kick from about 30 metres out. Railways bounced back with two goals of their own before Chapman Valley kicked another as they both headed into quarter time. A one goal apiece second quarter saw both teams only separated by five points as the Royals led going into the sheds at half-time. The Blues managed to replicate a third quarter performance like that from the last time the two teams met. A six-goal quarter saw the home side charge ahead as Chapman Valley were left in the dust. The Royals only managed one goal in the third term as they went into the break down by four goals. A fast start by the Royals in the third term caught Railways by surprise with two quick goals. With the momentum now in Chapman Valley’s favour, the Royals had a sniff of getting back into the contest before a contentious call led to a goal to Railways which was thought to be touched on the line. Railways then went on to run away with it in a two goal apiece quarter which saw the home side deliver victory. * At GBSC Sports Park it was Brigades that triumphed over Mullewa in a 44-point win to the Hawks at home. Hassam Ahmat-Watkins had a day out with five goals to his name while the best players were Llewyn Valli, Hayden Johnson, Jack Deschamp, Izac Ronan and Adam Bradbury for the Hawks. For Mullewa, Callum papertalk booted three goals while teammates Calvin Wall, Keagan Simpson, Jamie Bratton, Gregg Galby and Leon Galby where all named among the best on for their side. Final score, Brigades 12.15 (87) to Mullewa 6.7 (43). * A close call for Towns at home saw the Bulldogs snare a thriller over Northampton by one point at Wonthella. Zane Marwick, Camron Hoefhamer, Drew Forrester, Callum Marquis and Drew Macgregor were among the best players for Towns. The Rams’ best players in the narrow loss were Jamie Williams, Jaden Poletti, Samuel Lawson, Callum Teakle and Kye Mcvee. Final score, Towns 4.8 (32) to Northampton 4.7 (31).
