Manjimup Shire Council has thrown its support behind changing the speed limit on Brockman Street in Pemberton from 50kmh to 40kmh.

At its meeting on the March 23, the council passed a motion pledging support for the measure, opening up the concept to public consultation.

Depending on the results of the consultation, the council will then direct its chief executive to ask Main Roads to lower the speed limit on Brockman Street to 40kmh.

If objections are received during the public consultation period, the council will consider those objections at a future meeting, before deciding whether to go ahead in its attempt to change the speed limit.

Shire president Paul Omodei said the measure was being considered to aid pedestrians in crossing the road safely in the Pemberton town centre.

“People, particularly the elderly, are finding it difficult to cross the road in sufficient time,” he said.

Cr Omodei credited west ward councillors Murray Ventris and Kenneth Lawrence for their advocacy in attempting to get the speed limit lowered on Brockman Street.

“For a number of years the Pemberton ward councillors, particularly Cr Lawrence, have been agitating to have the speed limit go down to 40kmh” he said.

“It’s just a common-sense arrangement.”
