Sports scientist to bring specialist training to Kalgoorlie-Boulder
Specialist sports training will be on offer in Kalgoorlie-Boulder next month during a free sports forum designed for athletes, coaches and sports officials to hone their skills and encourage personal development.
Facilitated by the Goldfields Sports Development Network, the two-day forum will host accredited sports scientist Dr Sacha Fulton who will deliver workshops covering sports professionalism, athlete wellbeing, exercise and running drills, and diet and nutrition.
Dr Fulton has more than 15 years experience in the industry and has worked with national, international and Olympic athletes during her career.
GSDN chair Tony Chisholm said young athletes in the Goldfields often missed out on specialist sports training that was often provided in metro areas.
He said the forum was designed to attract professionals to Kalgoorlie-Boulder and offer support to attendees from a wide range of sports and athletics disciplines.
“We recognise the fact that kids in the country don’t have as many opportunities as ones in the city,” he said.
“These highly skilled professionals don’t live in our towns, they will usually be based in capital cities so we’re facilitating an opportunity to get them to come to town and meet these young athletes face to face.
“(Dr Sacha Fulton) has got a lot needed experience in industry ... so it’s a really good opportunity to have someone like Sacha come to Kalgoorlie.”
The forum is funded by the State Government’s Regional Athlete’s Support Program which provides training opportunities for regional athletes.
Mr Chisholm said the annual sports forum had been halted because of COVID-19 restrictions with the last event held in 2019.
“Sports forums and workshops have been a bit difficult in the last couple of years with COVID so we’ve had to go looking for some online activities and webinars,” he said.
“It’s good now that we’re getting back into the opportunity to have people come face-to-face and participate in these active sessions.”
The Sports Forum will be at Kalgoorlie Overland Motel on June 10 and 11 with sessions at various times.
