Lithium-ion battery likely source of Kalgoorlie-Boulder carport blaze as rate of battery fires in WA climbs

A lithium-ion battery has been deemed the likely source of a carport blaze at a Kalgoorlie-Boulder home as the rate of battery fires in WA continues to climb. Multiple fire crews rushed to a home on Tumbarri Way in Hannans after a neighbour called triple-0 when they saw smoke pluming from a carport about 3.50pm on Tuesday. A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson told the Kalgoorlie Miner a lithium-ion battery had been identified as the probable cause of the fire. Commonly used in e-bikes, e-scooters and electric tools, lithium-ion batteries are causing more fires every year. So far this year there have been at least 90 lithium-ion battery fires in WA — a figure on track to break the record of 109 set in 2023. Following deaths in NSW and Queensland this year, DFES commissioner Darren Klemm urged the community to take precautions. “Lithium-ion batteries have fast become one of the greatest fire risks in our homes as products like e-rideables and cordless power tools become more common,” Mr Klemm said in June. “But these fires are preventable if you follow safety advice including charging on a hard surface and not leaving devices on charge indefinitely. “We’re also asking the community to be vigilant around other fire hazards such as candles, unattended heaters and kitchen fires.” Mr Klemm said home fires were more likely to start in the cooler months when people were spending more time indoors using heating or electronic devices. “Make sure you have a home fire escape plan, ensure your family knows what to do if a fire starts and check your smoke alarm regularly,” he said. “Only a working smoke alarm will wake you up and give you vital time to escape.” To reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires, DFES has recommended people buy reputable products and source replacement batteries from the original supplier. The community is also urged to regularly check for signs of physical damage and overheating and charge devices away from flammable items.
