Applications open for young people to represent their electorate at WA Youth Parliament

The next generation of changemakers is being called on to try their hand at politics by applying to join the WA Youth Parliament. Applications are open for people aged 15 to 25 from across the State to represent their electorate in the 2024 WA Youth Parliament. The four-month program, run by not-for-profit group the Y WA, is designed to give participants a taste of Australian politics as they draft, debate and advocate for mock youth-focused legislation. Former Kalgoorlie resident Callum Ellery represented the Kalgoorlie electorate in 2023 and said he would “highly recommend” the program. “I’d encourage pretty much anyone I know to give it a go,” he said. “If you’ve got an interest in politics then this is definitely for you; it will go beyond your expectations.” He said he loved watching his peers gain confidence in public speaking as they presented speeches in Parliament. “The kind of skills, connections and memories you make on the program last for life,” he said. “What you get out of it is well beyond what you put in.” Mr Ellery has continued his passion for politics and is now working in policy-making as an electorate officer in Perth. The Y WA’s program aims to secure representatives from all 59 electoral districts across WA, including young people living in rural and remote locations. The program includes three training days, online meetings and a residential camp. It culminates in participants — who act as youth parliament members — attending Parliament House and holding debates in the chamber. Y WA CEO Tim McDonald said the Youth Parliament encouraged young people to “create the change they want to see”. “If you’re a young person passionate about issues and representing your community, then this is a program for you,” he said. “You’ll learn to work with a diverse range of people, gain deeper knowledge of political systems, including how to create your own legislation and write speeches, and you will develop lifelong friendships and networks.” Participants choose issues from any State Government portfolio to debate. Previous topics have included housing affordability, environmental responsibility, education, juvenile justice and health access in the regions. All Bills are presented to members of the Government and Opposition once completed for their review and consideration. Applications can be made at the Y WA website and will be open until March 24.
