Katanning Town Square will be dressed up for the 2021 Southern Art and Craft Trail alongside 50 other exhibitions throughout the Great Southern later this month.

Local artists are making curious shapes that will dangle from trees and infrastructure at the town square.

ArtSouthWA is encouraging artists passionate about crafts to join in on four soft-materials art installation workshops in town between September 25 and October 10.

ArtSouthWA chairwoman Merry Robertson said the Katanning Town Square installation would be created in these workshops.

“Those attending each workshop will be building more materials for the display and will gradually be hanging and increasing the size of it as the days go by,” she said. “Locals and visitors will be able to see the project grow throughout the duration of the Southern Art and Craft trail.”

Supported by the Shire of Katanning, the not-for-profit event is run by ArtSouthWA to promote a diverse range of arts and crafts across the region.

The workshops will be hosted by acclaimed Borden artist Jill O’Meehan.

“The aim of this creative project is threefold,” O’Meehan said.

“Firstly, it will provide regional artists with new skills, expanding their arts practice and offerings to their communities into the future.

“Secondly, members of the public will be invited to attend at certain times to add their personal creation to the project, and best of all, it will build an artwork for all to enjoy.”

Katanning Arts Centre chairman David Papenfus encouraged everyone to visit the installation and participate in the workshops.

“These workshops, participation events and resulting piece of public art is a fabulous way for both local residents and visitors alike to experience and contribute to the creative side of Katanning,” he said.

The workshops will be held on September 27 and 29, and October 4 and 7.
