Pumas hold tight on top position in Geraldton boys’, girls’ under-18 basketball

Pumas hung on to top spot in both the boys’ and girls’ top divisions of Geraldton junior basketball with wins in each competition on Friday evening.

They narrowly won in the boys’ under-18 division one against Stateside 36-32, and beat Chapman Valley Maroon 36-11 in the girls’.

Campbell Wood was the top scorer for the boys’ side, scoring 13 points. Sebastien Bradley was second top, with seven points.

For Stateside, Chris Harrington was top scorer, netting 14 points. Ty Healey scored nine points.

In the girls’, Sienna Forsyth scored 16 points for Pumas and Lailahni Tarapu scored 10 points.

Daisy Whitehurst scored six points for Trades and Layne Gillingham and Chanelle Wennekes each scored four.

Both second-placed teams also won.

In the boys’, Chapman Valley beat Dongara 51-30 and in the girls’, Trades beat Olympians 51-21.

Oliver Stokes scored 15 points for the Valley and Quinton Narkle scored 14 points. River Sandells scored 11 points for Dongara. Sally Harwood scored 16 points for Olympians and Paige Luckhurst scored nine points.

In senior action this week, men’s division one top side Pumas take on sixth-placed Hawks tonight and second take on fourth tomorrow as Olympians play Chapman Valley.

Third-placed Stateside play Trades.

In the women’s, league leaders Trades were due to play second-placed Pumas last night, while third-placed Stateside were due to play Chapman Valley.

In men’s division one action last week, Tom Mackay and Jake Baker each scored 18 points as Trades beat Chapman Valley 88-58 on Tuesday night.

Quinton Narkle scored 16 points and Dylan Myers scored 15 points, but it wasn’t enough.

Georgia Farley scored 17 points for Pumas on Monday night as they beat Chapman Valley 52-36.

Cassidy Powell scored eight points for the Valley.

In the other game, Kayley King scored 20 points for Trades and Hannah Trusso got 10 points as they beat Stateside 50-36.

Abbie MacDonald was Stateside’s top scorer, with 13 points.
